When I was little, this was our typical prayer over food, that the food would nourish and strengthen our bodies, but it was so typical that it ran together. I’m not sure where my disconnect with food began, but I can say it’s an issue now. I can almost feel myself leaving my body when I eat and being mindful with food is tricky. I try and focus, then it quickly slips away. I’m sure this has something to do with the excess weight on my body. I don’t feel satisfied or nourished when I can’t really experience my food. So today I get to really focus on experiencing my food (okay, I get to practice again). Putting my hand on my heart and a deep breath helps me become more present, maybe breathing in thank you to God and breathing out thank you to my body with my hand on my heart can be my meal prayer. Maybe this will help me to connect to and appreciate my body more.
